Although the Pardoner likes to repeat that, Money is the root of all evil: he makes sure he profits from his position. The Pardoner invites the "good" people to buy his relics and, once bought, proceeds to absolve themselves from their sins. Then he stands behind his pulpit and preaches about how donating to his church insures extra protection from their sins.
