Religion in Pardoner's Tale.

Does Chaucer criticize the religion in middle ages in this chapter? Because I think he is trying to show the hypocrisy but I don't know if it is related to religion or he is talking in general.

The pardoner says prayers for people and pardons their sins for money. There is definitely hypocrisy of the Church involved here. Although the Pardoner is supposed to be a pious man of God, he is quite open about drinking “licour of the vyne”, and have a “joly wenche” in every town.
