The novel's main premise revolves around the "Caretaker" and it's different meanings. Each of the characters is attempting to support themselves, and Davies, the title character is no different. When he accepts the job as caretaker, he hopes to provide himself with a sense of stability, a home, and a purpose. Aston, on the other hand, is already playing the part of caretaker by offering Davies the position. The fact that Davies cannot and will not perform his duties is secondary to all all else, as the play is not about his position, but rather, taking care of each other... or as we see in the end of the play, our failure to do so.
