The picture of American society in the novel The Catcher in the Rye

American society as portrayed in the novel the catcher in the rye can be seen as a materialistic and self absorbed culture. Holden is trying to find himself among the phony people of his society. He wants to understand why the world is the way it is and why does he feel that he has to fit into that world.
