It mostly deals with Grusha
Grusha finds herself in one conflicting situation after another. She loves the child she rescues, yet she often has to abandon him for his (and sometimes her) safety. She initially does not love Simon, but she ultimately wants to marry him. She finds she has to marry someone else for her own safety, but is able to marry Simon at the end of the story when the judge divorces her from her married husband. She loves her rescued child for who he is and not necessarily for what his inheritance can be while others only want the child to access his fortune. Grusha's life as portrayed in this story is one contradiction after another.
