How does the narrator’s comment that Rob Roy “pulled some clover” explain her green mouth?

It actually doesn't.... Rob Roy is the narrator's imaginary horse..... her explanation refers to her cleaning of the willow branch she'd use as a horse. She'd pulled some clover (leaves).
