Jerry is tackled three times in succession. He hits the ground, feels the pain and gets back up again. Jerry is insulted by the coach but still vows to make the football team. Jerry knows he has grit and determination.
Jerry's football tryout is a fiasco, he is beaten, aching, and told he will not get the position he desires (quarterback). His pain reminds him of his mother who has just died. He thinks about her pain and all the medication she had to take and feels sick. Her life taught him courage.
