The Chosen is about two Jewish boys and how they deal with whether to live secular or religious lives.
Danny also reads a great deal of Freud & literature about Hasidic Jews in history. It's his new-found knowledge that influences him more than just Reuven's father.
Also, Danny's father raised him in silence, and Danny resents his father for this. Because Danny didn't like what his father was, he didn't want to be like him, and was searching for a way out.
