did james know his father well?

No James's father, Andrew Dennis McBride, died while Ruth was pregnant with James. He passed away at forty-five of lung cancer, and James is the last of his children. He does however have a presence in the novel. He was kind and a man of great faith. He helped steer Ruth towards Christianity.
