Although Ruth ultimately found her true path in life, she never took the easiest road towards happiness. Some blacks, she explains, never accepted her, and she is aware that most interracial marriages fail because there are too many pressures on interracial couples. In her view, however, the requirements of marriage have nothing to do with race: "See, a marriage needs love. And God. And a little money. That's all. The rest you can deal with. It's not about black or white." In 1942, Ruth became a Christian and joined a Harlem church presided over by Reverend Brown.
