What does Ruth say about the South?
Life in the South was frightening. Ruth describes the South as somewhere the people were polite, but the underlying feeling felt like a bomb would go off at any moment. She said that "beneath the smiles and southern hospitality and politeness were a lot of guns and liquor and secrets ."
