When Hunter died, Ruth became deeply depressed. She tried to hide and supress her feelings of sadness but the children could tell something was wrong. They could see that their mother was not as decisive and headstrong as she once was. This made them sad but they were confused as to how to support her. To beat her depression she rode her bike. She looked odd at being a white lady riding a bike down the street every day. The children were a little embarrassed.
