Why did James McBride entitled the chapter 5 "The Old Testament"?

Ruth talks about her early days in Suffolk. Much of it had to do with religion hence the Old Testament reference. Her father was an unsuccessful Rabbi. His influence on his family and the black community which visited his store was negative. Ruth points out that it was not until she became a Christian that she knew real love.
