Mameh often fed birds and said never catch "birds who fly". She likely had a fondness for them because of their symbolism for both herself and Ruth. Ruth resembled a bird with wings, as she always had trouble settling down in one place. Mameh, crippled and unable to wander, found a bittersweet affection for birds who had the freedom she lacked.
