Ruth never really ignored matters of race and identity, she just didn't see them as important. Ruth was a genuinely accepting person. She didn't see color when she fell in love, and she didn't see that her children belonged to two different races because she did not live her life in terms of race. The rest of her world, however, did define people by race so Ruth had to teach her children that race did not matter: God was the color of water.
