Why doesn't Ruth like the Jewish religion?

Ruth has a lot of bad memories of growing up Jewish. Her father was both abusive and racist. Ruth does not like how Jews distinguish themselves above other ethnic groups like blacks. She believes that God is in everyone, not just the chosen people.
