The Color Purple
Consider Celie’s new faith in God. How does it challenge the conventional patriarchal view of religion?

Initially Celie, sees God as an old white man. That is the status-quo ingrained in her through a white society. Celie, however, changes as she witnesses the oppression of blacks as well as the patriarchal misogyny of the world. She increasingly sees God as genderless without race. This universal interpretation of God is the antithesis of the socio-cultural specific packaged imagery she is used to.
