What was the plan for getting Sophia out of jail? Why is this reason peculiar?

Squeak is the niece of the white prison warden. Mr. ______ tells her to go and beg for Sofia’s release. The situation is peculiar because they dress Squeak up “like she a white woman” and give her fake papers and a script to trick the warden into releasing Sophia.
