This quote illustrates Dante's understanding that in the end our fate is in God's hands alone. Our destinies are controlled by God, and eventually, our deeds, both good and bad, will be punished or rewarded on His terms. Dante had realized his belief that he could act as God, and mete out punishment or revenge on God's name was inaccurate. He conceded that if we simply "wait and hope," the bad will be punished, and the good rewarded.
