I'm not sure about this one, but I believe this is where the Count finds out that one of Villefot's goals in marrying Valentine off to the Baron is to remove the suspicion that he had something to do with the Baron's father's assassination.

The irony here comes from the fact that Nortier can't speak, but he can insure that all those vying for his money will not get it. Only Valentine will be included in his will.
