Albert decides not to particiapte in the duel because his mother apprises him of the entire story and its background. When Albert meets the Count he tells him that he was right to avenge Ferdinand for what he'd done; Albert now understands everything.

Albert was ready to fight, but mercedes came to the count begging him not to kill her son. he agreed and she then told albert to call off the duel because he was Dantes and still had revenge to get.
