Like many other Restoration Comedies The Country Wife is characterised by farcical humour that runs throughout the whole play, generated through wit, sexual innuendo and a great deal of dramatic irony.
Wycherley uses disguise to emphasise a theme of hypocrisy and deception. Pinchwife disguises Margery as a man at the Exchange so that his friends do not notice her hence developing major themes.
Letters have been used by Wycherley to develop major themes. Pnchwife forces Margery to write a letter to Mr Horner warning him to stay away from her. Unfortunately for him, Margery writes a second letter expressing her undying love to Horner. This helps to develop themes of deception and jealousy.
