In thinking of siblings or even good friends, how do brothers and sisters (or friends) both challenge us to be more than we are and also keep us in our place?

This is more a general question. I suppose some sibling rivalry can take place in a family. Brothers and sisters might compete but, in the end, should have each other's back (support) because they are family. They can be critics of each other without necessarily offending the sibling.
