I think the point is that the people were SO afraid of witchcraft thaty they wanted to eliminate the very THOUGHT of it.

hi!...well i know its a bit late but for those interested in knowing some of that question the answer would be: the girls were making slanders against all the other girls they didn't like...for instance "i saw Goody Good with the devil!"...they were saying that becasue of vengence throughout the town and are wanting to eliminate other people that they despise. the witchcraft was simply their way of getting the "accused" to be killed...as said in the play
