Proctor's seasoning of the soup and praise for his wife a few moments later (she doesn't know he's seasoned the soup) is significant because it helps us to understand how much he wishes to make his wife happy..... to please her. The two need healing in their relationship, and in this act, we can see Proctor's wish to aid in the healing.
