Cause #1 - peer pressure seen in the behavior of the girls.

Cause #2 - Avoiding the threat of hanging - the women confess to something they did not do which saves their lives through a lie

Cause #3 - Going along with whatever the Puritans wanted as their doctrine and agreeing with that doctrine even when it was wrong.
