Judge Hawthorne is the judge who presides over the Salem witch trials. He remains largely subservient to Deputy Governor Danforth, but applies the same tortured reasoning to charges of witchcraft. Much like Danforth he validates himself and his job by accusing people of witchcraft. He truly believes that he is God's representative entrusted to hunt down evil and eliminate it. The trials and hysteria are in his interest. They validate both his job and his standing in the community.
