pages 55-68
John and Elizabeth's relationship is strained. It is full of suspicion and guilt. Elizabeth suspects Johns infidelity with Abigail. They discuss farm stuff but the underlying tension of Elizabeth's suspicions is almost palpable. Finally Elizabeth comes closer to the point,
Elizabeth-You were alone with her?
John- For a moment alone, aye.
Elizabeth-Why, then it is not what you told me.
This infuriates John, largely because of his own guilt. The strain builds until finally John must come clean much later in the play. As the play progresses John begins to purge himself of his sins and the two seem to become closer.
