You really have to feel for the guy. His life has been turned upside down. He is a flawed man who is desperately trying to hold on to a shred of dignity in a town that has gone to Hell. Proctor was already dealing with his guilt of adultery. Signing his life away would have meant that his name means nothing. He would be no different than the hypocrites that he loathed like Reverend Parris. In the end, when all is said and done, all a man has left is his name. Proctor felt he could not live with anymore lies so I guess (for him) he did the right thing.
