Obviously religion should not run our lives!
I think the play is more about the paranoia than about the religion.
yeah I see where you're coming from, but because the town was so staunchly theocratic, religion made them paranoid because religion was every aspect of their lives.

The occurrence of the 1692 - was a repressive society, where religion was a pivotal priority. The government was theocratic; thus it was repressive, attitudes were led on religion - especially witchcraft, witchcraft/devils was a forbidden act. (Puritans were austere) Paranoia and religion tear the village of Salem - Religion is the main cause, but it makes them paranoid. They're scared and overreact.
