How can the crucible be read as a criticism of theoretical rule?

The puritanism of the church in Salem was inherently flawed. As with any theocracy, the ideology is only as good as the people enforcing it. Unfortunately people are inherently flawed and whatever "goodness" is meant to come from a theocracy will become twisted and oppressive.
