Rev. Hale's arrival in Salem reeked with over-confidance. The fact that he was summoned denotes his importance; his demeanor was marked by self-perceived authority. He arrives touting "heavy books," which he said were "weighted with authority" to identify and cast out devils, witches, etc. from "afflicted" persons. His purpose is to discover and prove "signs of witchcraft" in the girls.

Hale's beliefs add to his innate confidance, He's young, rash, and adheres his Puritan values. Because of this, he feels himself infallible.

"You know that Satan cannot overcome a minister."
