How has Hale changed?

In Act IV, we see Hale as a man more concerned with saving the lives of the innocent, than a man bent on proving the existence and practice of witchcraft. His character becomes less arrogant and more empathetic. He begins to seek the truth above all else and genuinely seems to regret his initial actions.
