John Proctor becomes more assertive in Act II, working for the good of the village, not just for himself and Elizabeth. Their marriage is on shaky ground and both of them struggle daily with John's adultery. Elizabeth can't seem top forgive him, and he most certainly can't forgive himself, but he's getting closer and it's evident.

Elizabeth's arrest brings out the protective husband, and he is forced to come out of his self imposed isolation to interact with members of the community. In this act, John learns that it takes a community....... not an individual to take control of community events.
