Proctor's confession insures his life, when he rips it up, he condemns himself to death. The outcome chonges because the truth is revealed. John will not lie to save his life, and he will tell the truth to save his name. Throughout the play, Proctor was so concerned with hiding his affair and keeping his good name that he put others in danger. His refusal to publicly adnit to his affair with Abigail allowed her to carry on with her lies and accusations.
