Miller gives the Puritan town of Salem a very narrow existence. They see themselves as an oasis of Godliness amidst a sea of darkness and savagery outside its borders. Salem, however, was no Disneyland or holy refuge. It was a pretty dark place full of bickering and scheming neighbours.
