We are first introduced to a very sparse and simple room. A simple chair, chest, table and bed are all made of wood. We get the feeling that we are in the wilderness and the time period fits the Puritan era. There is emptiness about the setting that creates and sustains the dark brooding mood throughout the play. Everything is rustic and simple in a very harsh environment.
