Proctor cheated on his wife with Abigail when she was their servant. This remains unspoken for much of the play however the tension between the two is always apparent. Elizabeth knows that John's infidelity is eating away at her husband. John's name means everything to him and he has sullied it. Elizabeth says it is not her place to give John forgiveness rather it is he who must forgive himself.
