We can infer that Hale visited the prisoners in order to assuage his own guilt and complicity in the proceedings. Hale came to understand that the trials were a farce, and that those sentenced to death were not guilty..... he saw that the entire witch hunt was based upon the false accusations of young girls..... he was remorseful. Hale went to see the prisoners hoping to save lives.
