Elizabeth understands that her husband has tried himself, found himself guilty, and condemned himself already....... in his own heart, and that the conviction in his heart is far more meaningful to him than the findings of any public court.

Sorry, I must have backspaced. What this reveals to us is John's moral character and values. It reiterates his honesty and integrity.......... John is a good man; he's tortured by his own actions, but no one can inflict greater punishment upon him than he does upon himself.
