What is the Putnam’s grievance over land? What significance might this have?

Putnam covets other people's land. He blames Mr. Corey for taking it and John Proctor for logging it. The land isn't his but he just clams it is. Putnam will use false allegations of witchcraft to get these men in trouble so he can take their land.
