Parries is Proctor's primary advesary. They have stark differences in how the church should set it's priorities. Parries wants the. Hurrah to have fine things and that he should be well paid. Proctor believes the church should focus on spiritual matters only.

Proctor is his own worse enemy. His ideals and sense of right and wrong, combined with the guilt he feels over his own actions leave him unable to defend himself and protect his family.
