Parris is a paranoid and greedy man, and his congregation is well aware of his greediness. He believes that a faction in his church is intent upon removing him from his position, and his description of his congregation members, "stiff-necked people," shows that he doesn't think much of them either.

Parris sees himself underpaid and unappreciated. People in the congregation see Parris as overly concerned with money, gold, and his desire to hold the deed to the house he inhabits. The man is power hungry, arrogant, and suspicious; he is not the fatherly vision of love and guidance one would expect in a minister.
