Why does Danforth insist that Proctor sign the confession?

a) Proctor's children must be punished

b) The town must know that he has confessed

I would go with "B".

Danforth needs to validate his job and the suffering his court has inflicted on the town. Proctor's "confession" would give him the credibility he wants.
