The Crucible
why does Giles Corey set his own wife up ?
like why did he tell Hale that his wife is reading strange books if he knew that would have made them think of witchcraft.

Giles doesn't understand why anyone, let alone a woman, is interested in reading. Giles is not malicious in his revelations, he's simply not the brightest lightbulb in the bunch. He's stating an opinion, books are strange to him...... but he in no way accused his wife or intended for her to be harmed. Thus, he doesn't set her up, but the things he says do lead to the accusations against her.
