His relationship with his wife has turned cold because of his infidelity.
John is hoping that he can save his marriage. He is also hoping that Elizabeth doesn’t suspect anything. Of course Elizabeth does. The tension can be felt in the kitchen.
John is trying to rekindle their love. He wants to start over after his affair with Abigail. So far, it's not working.
why does john feel "a certain disappointment"? and how can john's comments be interpreted symbolically? what is the "winter" to which he refers?
