simple answer
and from act 3
Proctor's goal in bringing Mary Warren to court is to get the truth out, end the witchcraft madnes, and clear his wife, Elizabeth, of the accusations. He does not even care that his adultery may come out in the open, just as long as everyone knows the character of Abigail and can see that her accusations are false. Mary knows that Abigail and the other girls are faking their supposed attacks by witches. Mary is the one who made the poppet and gave it to Elizabeth as directed to set her up for a witchcraft charge. Unfortunately Mary is not strong enough for the task. She begins to tell her story at the court and the others begin to call her a witch. Then she recants of her story and begins to accuse Proctor of witchcraft.
