How does this novel portray man's scientific advancement?

The only thing I can think of would be our advances in the medical field. For years, autism wasn't understood, diagnosed, or even named. Many people were sent to institutions because Asperger's Syndrome patients were deemed mentally unstable or disabled. As time passed, new information was discovered and treatments put in place, allowing patients to function and thrive. The spectrum is very large, thus, treatments and abilities are varied.
