Why is Christopher afraid of his father, after knowing that he killed the dog?

Christopher has difficulty interpreting humor. After the Wellington dog is killed, Christopher is unable to interpret his father's reaction. When Chris finds out Chris finds out his father killed the dog, Chris thinks his father might kill him. He doesn't make the distinction between person and dog.
