Chapter one begins at the ending. The responses of Ivan Ilych's friends and relatives are universally luke warm bordering on indifference. In this sense, Tolstoy is satirizing a universal superficiality and hypocrisy of upper class social structure. Peter, who has known Ivan since childhood, only looks to his self-interest as a result of Ivan's death. I hope this helps a little.
